Artist Reception Friday, November 3, 2023, 7-9PM
Lauren Philips plunges headfirst into intricate realms of trauma, dismantling conventional notions of worth and significance with her solo exhibition, Belongings. Delving into scars inflicted upon us by external forces, she unravels a web of fear, resilience, and heightened awareness etched into the psyche and body. Her work draws from eclectic influences such as interior design, horror cinema, trompe l’oeil technique, shibari rope artistry, and the nuances of romanticism, to craft vivid and meticulously detailed acrylic paintings on wood cutouts.
Within her body of work, the recurring motif of blossoming flowers symbolizes growth, hope, and novel perspectives. Her compositions are notable for their audacious color palettes, the evocative interplay of light and shadow, labyrinthine patterns, and the occasional disorienting perspective.
Blooming flowers represent growth, opportunity, hope, and a new outlook. These visual elements poignantly capture the profound emotions and distorted realities often intertwined with trauma and hyper vigilance.
Lauren’s artistic pursuit aspires to construct a sanctuary of understanding, healing, and empowerment. In her view, confronting pain and fear head-on renders these emotions more navigable, clearing the path for a transformative journey toward healing. Her work is a compelling testament to the therapeutic and redemptive power of artistic expression in confronting the most profound psychological scars.
