The Return to Source

As Told By: Emily Burian, Founder of SÕW | Source of Wellness

I usually explain that I’m a functional nutritionist and yoga instructor, but SÕW is more than a wellness brand—it’s a return to your source. My path into this work wasn’t a straight line. It started with yoga and grew into a curiosity about how food and daily habits influence how we actually function.

I wanted to create an intuitive path for others that felt realistic and approachable, and I’ve found that Kansas City is the ideal home base for that kind of grounded life. There’s a specific substance here that shows up naturally in my work. It’s not trend-driven or performative; it values longevity. That quiet, intentional push toward long-term health is what keeps me rooted here, allowing the freedom to grow without feeling like the market is overly saturated.

When I need to ground myself, I head to the Westside. It sits just outside the energy of downtown and the Crossroads, offering the intimacy of a true neighborhood. It’s walkable, layered, and quietly vibrant, with historic homes and local restaurants that make it feel lived-in rather than curated. The kind of place where you can feel the seasons shift, which naturally shapes how I move through the day. Visitors often underestimate us, missing the hidden gems because they don’t look past the surface. But if you take the time to explore, you see how dynamic we’ve become. We are a city built on the foundation of the Jazz District, with a sense of rhythm and creativity that connects our past to our progressive present.

To feel the true pulse of this place, you have to lean into our rituals. Start your morning with a coffee at Mildred’s or Goat Hill, then come find me at the Crossroads Hotel for rooftop yoga. Spend the afternoon walking the Crossroads to shop, explore galleries, and let the neighborhood unfold. Settle into a long, nourishing dinner at Farina, and end the night with a relaxed nightcap at XO. It’s a day that balances movement, nourishment, and ease. That’s the real Kansas City: an invitation to slow down, participate, and connect.

I’ve watched the Crossroads Hotel develop a life of its own over the years. It has become a kind of community hub where the lines between locals and visitors start to blur, mostly through simple things like movement and conversation. It feels less like a destination you pass through and more like a hub that brings people together through movement and conversation. Much like my work, the hotel focuses on quality over quantity and thoughtful design. There’s a shared focus on creating moments that feel personal rather than generic, inviting people to feel cared for without excess or overwhelm. When you stay here, I don’t want you to just see the buildings; I want you to notice the people. Kansas City is built on connection, and once you start paying attention, you’ll find it’s everywhere.
