Rachel Hayes: Field of Vision

Join us in celebrating Rachel Hayes beautiful art pieces in our Art Gallery. We will have small bites and bubbles available!

Artist Rachel Hayes creates large-scale installations of fabric that infuse color and form into architectural and natural environments. Hayes’s celebrated geometric fiber artworks refer to abstract painting and incorporate colors and sightlines of their surrounding environment. These elaborate textiles respond to and highlight the beauty of a space, transforming it. In Field of Vision, Hayes brings together a collection of skies, sunsets, and billowing clouds printed on nylon that together animate the Crossroads Hotel gallery — their opaque and translucent color and textures create a spatial dance that lures visitors into this inspiring place.

About the Artist

Rachel Hayes was born in Independence, Missouri, and lives and works in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hayes received her BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute, and her MFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In 2018, Hayes collaborated with the Italian fashion house Missoni, culminating with a solo exhibition during Milan Design Week. For the fashion show itself, Hayes created a custom canopy that floated above the runway, filtering sunshine onto the collection as models walked underneath.

She is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Award in Painting and Sculpture, Augustus Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship in Sculpture, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship in Sculpture, Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture, and a Charlotte Street Fund Award. Hayes has attended the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program, New York, NY; Sculpture Space Residency, Utica, NY; Art Omi International Artists’ Residency, Ghent NY; Roswell Artist-in-Residence program in Roswell, NM; and the Tulsa Artist Fellowship in Tulsa, OK.

Field of Vision is curated by Tiffany Meesha Thompson and Hesse McGraw, executive director, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

Crossroads Hotel gallery and art program is organized by El Dorado and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

The Crossroads Hotel gallery is open to all, 24 / 7.
