Soakie’s Was Home

Jun 30 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Crossroads Hotel Kansas City invites you to celebrate PRIDE Month with SOAKIE’S WAS HOME:

A solo exhibition by Nasir Anthony Montalvo telling the story of Soakie’s, an Italian sandwich shop that doubled as a Black gay bar in Downtown Kansas City from 1993-2004. 20 years since the bar’s closing, this exhibition honors the contributions of Kansas City’s Black LGBTQ+ community and explores how we use Soakie’s memory to build Black queer futures.

Materials featured in the exhibition are provided by {B/qKC}, a community archive of Midwestern Black queer history founded by Montalvo.

Open for viewing from 6/29–6/30 in the Crossroads Banquet Room.
Closing reception with food and a live DJ on 6.30, 6PM–9PM.
entry is free; merchandise available for purchase on site.
